Several world leaders have taken the opportunity to wish him a quick recovery. It is fair enough to say that nobody deserves to be infected with the virus no matter what they have once done or said in life. However this will not change the fact that one has once said or done bad things. Mr.Johnson is known to be a very controversial politician with some of his statements causing problems across the world. He has often been accused of being a racist leader who views the white man to be more superior to the Africans.
His opinions on Africa have continued to cause a stir online for a very long time. He is always subjected to divided opinions whenever Africa has been drafted as the subject of the discourse.
The former London Mayor and Foreign Secretary succeeded Mrs.Theresa May as the Prime Minister of the UK after he was elected as the new Conservative leader in a ballot by the party members.
Since taking power, the cheeky politician has continued to cause a buzz with his past pronouncements about Africa coming to light. Many have questioned his policy on Africa and after he was bedded with the virus, one would be forgiven to question why he has been propelling so much negativity against Africa as if he is immortal.
His failure to appreciate African diversity has baffled many in recent years. In October 2016, Johnson was criticized for referring to Africa as a country instead of a continent. He had only been in office for three months and he was discussing the life expectancy situation in the continent when he made the statement. He said, ‘‘For all its difficulties, life expectancy in Africa has risen astonishingly as that country has entered the global economic system.
‘‘In 2000, the average Ethiopian lived to only 47, it’s now 64 and climbing,’‘ he continued. Many deciphered his statement as a form of abuse to Africans. Many questioned the idea of a world leader who does not have an idea that Africa is a big continent and not a single country.
Many have also criticized him for his stance on British colonialism after he came out to defend the British rule in African colonies. He was quoted admitting re-colonialism would be Africa's best option to receive enlightenment. Many also viewed the kind of language he used in describing the black race to be a racist one – something that he came out and apologized after lots of media pressure. For example on the situation in Libya a few years ago he told the conservatives, “They’ve got a brilliant vision to turn Sirte, with the help of the municipality of Sirte, to turn it into the next Dubai. The only thing they’ve got to do is clear the dead bodies away and then we will be there.”
The controversial assertions that if Africans could clear the dead bodies in the Libyan city of Sirte, the city could be transformed into the new Dubai by British investors, did not settle well with many Africans.
Mr. Johnson was once again on the receiving end after advocating for a re-colonization of the continent. He said, ‘‘The best fate for Africa would be if the old colonial powers, or their citizens, scrambled once again in her direction; on the understanding that this time they will not be asked to feel guilty.’‘ he concluded.
As a continent, Africa has been characterized by a very strong moral fabric, with forgiveness being a key ingredient of the African meal. As the epicenter of global forgiveness, the continent may have forgiven Mr. Johnson, but this does not mean that the said oppression and exploitation didn't happen or has been forgotten. The once described "God's Continent" has forgiven Mr.Johnson and wishes him nothing but a quick recovery.
What are your thoughts on Johnson's situation? Could It be a form of God's punishment for his policies against Africa?
