On February 14, 2012, a Police helicopter carrying the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, John Haruna and three other senior officers burst into flames and crashed killing everyone on board.
The tragic incident occurred in Kabong,Jos South Local Council of Plateau state..
It was gathered that the helicopter crashed into a building injuring an unspecified number of people including a baby. The casualties in the building were taken to the Air Force Military Hospital in Jos. Their injuries were not so serious and they survived.
According to reports, the police officers were on a routine aerial patrol of the city when the crash happened.
Chief Executive Officer of the Accident Investigation Bureau, Akin Olateru stated that while the cause of the accident could not be conclusively decided, investigation revealed some discrepancies and non-compliance with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations. He noted that the pilot's medical had expired at the time of accident and the simulator recurrence had elapsed. He also revealed that the co-pilot was not type-rated on the Bell 427 helicopter. He further stated that the engineer that released the helicopter prior to the flight had no type training and type rating on the aircraft model.
